Fundi Girls

Fundi Girls is an equity-focused program that aims to increase classroom engagement and bring more girls into STEM/science fields by intentionally engaging more girls and women and providing increased resources, training and exposure where necessary.

Fundi Girls targets girls between 6 – 25 years of age and is designed to run as a stand-alone model while being a thread that weaves through all the work that we do at Fundi Bots.

Since 2016, we have impacted 5925 girls and 315 teachers across four regions in Uganda. From January 2019 – March 2021, we have impacted 3725 girls.

The Problem

Science education in Uganda has been reduced to teaching enough theory to simply pass exams. Practical, problem-based learning and experimentation has fallen by the wayside. This leads to poor overall classroom performance, poor skills development, low job & career prospects and ultimately, weak economic development and poor livelihoods.

This problem is compounded for girls who suffer extreme societal challenges, biases and stigma both at home and at school severely limiting access to quality science education. This creates a strong disadvantage and handicaps their ability to pursue STEM disciplines resulting in fewer Ugandan women pursuing and earning from STEM careers.

Fundi Girls Program Activities.

Robotics and STEM training program

The School Outreach Program focuses on providing awareness, knowledge, resources and training at the school level and includes hands-on robotics training workshops, speaker presentations, science project assistance, soft skills training and career guidance. The School Outreach schedules are flexible and are primarily determined by the school’s timetable.

The Fundi Girls school outreach curriculum has been specifically designed to also solve some of the challenges that indirectly affect science learning for girls for example self-esteem, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, bullying, building healthy relations and friendships between boys and girls or fellow girls etc.

Enhanced Science Curriculum

The Enhanced Science Curriculum is designed to be directly embedded within the national curriculum. It involves the development of modules, teaching aids and practical learning tools for teachers and students. Together, these improve student engagement and pedagogical delivery.

Teacher Training

The Female Teacher Training program (training of trainers) creates access for teachers across Uganda to improve their ICT skills and pedagogy by introducing additional teaching aids in the classroom, radically transforming content delivery in classrooms.

This program works in collaboration with the Enhanced Science Curriculum and the Robotics and STEM training program.

Community Outreach.

Fundi Girls works partners with community-based organizations, to engage women and girls in the communities to participate in robotics sessions, basic ICT training and soft skills training to provide career development opportunities to out of school girls under the age of 25.

Internships

Fundi Bots conducts a rigorous internship for University students for a period of 9 weeks every year between May – July. This internship equips students with a massive collection of technical and soft skills, ranging from computer programming, electronics, project planning, design and implementation, entrepreneurship and communication among others.

The internship program is intentional about having more girls accepted for the programme. Of the students enrolled for the internship at least 40% are girls and they are pursuing programs in the STEM field.

Fundi Girls Community.

The Fundi Girls Community is a community of girls and young women who have gone through Fundi Girls program activities. The Fundi Girls Community provides a space for our alumni and beneficiaries to build relationships with each other and support each other.

It also allows us to;

  • Stay in touch and follow up with our beneficiaries,
Provide extra support to our beneficiaries for example mentorship, sharing of resources and opportunities.
    Create a space for networking
    Provide exposure and visibility.

Fundi Girls Champions.

Fundi Girls Champions are successful and phenomenal women in STEM who act as role models and mentors to our Fundi girls. The decisions that we make in our lives are often influenced by the women around us or those in our lives. For most of us our mothers, guardians and aunties have greatly influenced the way we think and act. When we see these women take risks, accomplish wonderful things, be resilient in tough times etcetera we follow these examples that they may have unknowingly set for us. Role models affect how women view themselves and what they are capable of becoming. Fundi Girls Champions are integrated into every activity that Fundi Girls carries out; schools’ outreach, community outreach, community, internship.
